GSIS Mutual Fund and the P1,000 Initial Investment Privilege for Government Employees

It has been a very wide notion here in the Philippines that investments are for the rich only. Once investments are being opened during casual conversations, you’ll never fail to here a side comment “wow, ang yaman ah! (Wow, how rich!)”.

But the thing is, there are so many unexplored investment opportunities out there, of course, my main be is for stocks and mutual funds.

Let me share you some good news, particularly for government employees. I’ve been reading GSIS Mutual Fund prospectus and noted that all government employees may start investing for only P1,000.00. That’s right! For only a thousand bucks you can already start investing in mutual funds, and be part of the market that sparks the Philippine economy.

The better news is, you may top up additional investments for a minimum of P500.00 only.

Alright! I may sound too excited and may seem I’m trying to persuade you to start gathering the requirements and start investing today, I apologize, but I actually am. :)

Let me give you a little tale about GSIS Mutual Fund.

GSIS Mutual Fund, Inc. (GMF)

GMF is named after its sponsor, GSIS. It was launched last July 1, 1998 to specifically cater the investing needs of government employees and institutions. Currently, it is managed by PhilAm Asset Management, Inc. (PAMI).

GMF is a balanced fund, meaning, it’s portfolio invested in the stock market and also on fixed income securities, allocated through a strategic proportion.

Minimum initial investment for this fund is P5,000.000 and minimum subsequent investments is P1,000.00. However, as I’ve mentioned earlier, government employees are privileged to have a minimum initial investment of P1,000.00 and minimum subsequent investment of P500.00.

Performance-wise, as of Aug 1, 2012, investors who have invested in GMF for the past 5 years have been receiving an average of 11.78% annual growth. Now compare that to receiving 1% interest from your savings deposit. Duh!!!

To further help you decide, it is also worth mentioning that GSIS Mutual Fund was awarded by Lipper during 2010 as the Best Performing Fund in the Mixed Asset PHP Balanced category.

That made me think. My mom is a public school teacher. I think I’ll be opening an account for here. If you’re interested too, you may find all the necessary requirements here. Then you may send the everything here.

Have further questions? Please use the comment form below. Don’t worry, I don’t bite.

Here is the complete copy of the funds’ prospectus. You can find the policy for minimum initial investment in page 12.
